If you live within walking distance of a grocery store, try going on foot next time instead of driving the car. Not only will you get some exercise, but you will also be severely limited on what you can bring home, which will result in savings and probably a healthier waistline since you won’t have room for impulse buys.
We often don’t think about how much freedom a car gives us, but when you are grocery shopping, knowing you have the whole trunk of car to bring things home in can really make your shopping trip uninhibited. That means you can spend more than you planned to and end up with some things that probably were not on the list.
By walking or biking to the grocery store, you are forced to stick closely to your shopping list and bring home only what you are physically capable of carrying. Although this will not work when you need to bring home a bag of dog food, for instance, for those fill-in trips throughout the month, it can really save you money.
Having grown up in the country where things are too far away to walk, I wish I had the option to walk to the store when needed. If you live too far to walk, consider riding your bike. In good weather, you can bike several miles to get groceries or other necessities.
Walking or biking is a great way to save money and get in better shape, two things all of us can surely benefit from.
