One of the biggest ways to save on your groceries is to lessen the amount of trips you make to the store each month. I know people who only pick-up their groceries once each month. In order to do this you’ll need to have an addition freezer. The size of the freezer depends on the size of your family.
The only thing I don’t like about shopping once per month is that you need to store excess milk in your freezer and then thaw it out as you need it. My sister does this all the time, but I just don’t like the taste of the milk after it has been frozen. Instead, I’d rather just grab additional milk from a little convenience store in between shopping trips.
I think most couples and families can get away with grocery shopping once every other week, or twice per month if there happen to be 5 weeks in that month. I see the most savings in my pocketbook with the reduction of impulse buys. Think about it. If you shop twice each month, you only impulse buy twice. If you shop four times a month, you’ll end up impulse buying four times.
It is important that you have all of your meals planned out for the two weeks or four weeks you plan on going in between trips. Otherwise, you’ll end up running out of things which will cause you to go back to the store again. This defeats the purpose of going longer in between shopping trips.
Make sure you still use your coupons and purchase the brands that are on sale to maximize your savings.
