Make Your Own Grocery Price Book

There are grocery price books available for purchase on, but it is rather easy to make your own. A grocery price book allows you to quickly spot sale trends so that you can purchase all of your groceries when they are at their lowest.

Start off with a 3-ring binder and some dividers. Label the dividers with the categories you would find in the grocery store. For example, vegetables, fruits, meats, dairy, frozens, baby items, canned foods, and cleaning supplies are all good categories to start with.

Create a spreadsheet by hand or on your computer, and then make a bunch of copies. You will need one page for each grocery item you purchase on a regular basis. You can add pages each time you go to the grocery store, you do not have to prepare them all at once. The spreadsheet should have the following headings: date, store, product brand, and sale price. You can also add the unit price of the item, but this is entirely optional.

Keep track of the items you buy at each grocery store. Record the date of any price changes in the item on your spreadsheet. Stores often follow the same patterns from year to year. For example, ShopRite has a can can sale twice per year. Knowing when that sale is will allow you stock up on canned items so that you never have to pay full price.

Review the grocery price book at the end of one year’s time. Circle the dates when each product reached its lowest price, or just highlight that entry with a yellow highlighter. Plan to buy the items over the next year when they are will save you the most money, and don’t forget to use coupons at the same time. You may even end up getting several items for free!
