Mini Guide to Grocery Sale Cycles

Regardless of your geographical area, the vast majority of products typically go on sale at least three or four times a year. While others, such as fruits and vegetables, go on sale when they are in season.

Many times, when a new product is introduced, it goes on sale immediately. This makes perfect sense. I know, from personal experience, that I am more inclined to try something new when there's a great price attached. When there's a coupon available, as well, it's even a better deal!

Special occasions and holidays are other times that products go on sale. Examples include baking supplies that go on sale before Thanksgiving until right up until Christmas and B-B-Q sauce and other condiments that are always on sale in the summer.

Some sales coordinate with national food holiday months or days like National Garlic Month, National Hot Breakfast Month, National Cherry Pie Day and National Hot Dog Day.

December is the ideal time to stock up on root vegetables and several varieties of fruit. This includes sweet potatoes, turnips, celery root, butternut squash, Brussels sprouts, cranberries, grapefruit, kiwi, tangerines, pomegranates and more.

If you have room in your freezer, ham and turkey prices are still quite low in December. So, it's a wonderful time to stock up on them.

According to the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service, fresh  (uncooked) ham freezes well for 6 months. Cured (uncooked) ham freezes well for 3 to 4 months. A fresh whole turkey can be frozen for up to 1 year.

Remember, for the biggest savings, when something goes on sale but enough to last approximately 12 weeks. This typically gives you an adequate supply, until the next cycle rolls around.
